This ProValet.io Blog Post is Part of a Series Designed to Help Small Business Owners Manage Their Field Service Software and Keep Their Business Running Like a Pro

There are a lot of things that go into having a successful small field service business. From your product or service to your marketing and sales strategies, it’s important to have everything in place if you want to achieve long-term success.

But there’s one element of business that’s often overlooked, yet it can have a huge impact on your bottom line: your end of day routine. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the everyday routine and it’s also tempting to just shut down – both mentally and physically – as the end of the day draws near. After all, owning and operating a business can be exhausting and is not for the faint of heart. However, before you head home for dinner, pick up the kids, meet friends for happy hour, or whatever your typical end-of-day routine holds, think twice about how to end the business day effectively.

If you’re not sure what to do before you close out your business day, here are 8 tips that can help:

Finish One Key Task. The first tip on how best to end the day relates to how you start the day and that’s to determine one key thing that you absolutely must get done by day’s end. If you can do that job first, great! If that’s not possible, decide that you’ll do it as soon as possible and certainly by the end of day. By getting the most important chore accomplished, you’ll feel better.

Plan for the next day. One of the best ways to close out your business day is by taking a few minutes to plan for the next one. Make a list of the tasks you need to accomplish and set a schedule for yourself. This will help you hit the ground running the next morning, which can lead to greater productivity and results.

Clean up your surroundings. During this past year’s health pandemic, it’s clear that business owners, as well as their employees, have been working in all sorts of conditions and locations, whether it at an actual office, a home office, or even out of the business vehicle visiting customers and work site. Regardless, take a few minutes to refresh your “space” so it will warm and inviting when you return the next morning. You’ll be glad you did!

Take some time to reflect on your day. At the end of each day, it’s important to take a step back and reflect on what went well and what didn’t. This can help you identify areas for improvement and make changes for the next day. After all, how you end the day is just as important as how you start the day!

Review your goals and progress. Finally, take some time to review your goals and progress. Are you on track to meet them? If not, what can you do to course correct? This is a valuable exercise that can help keep you focused and motivated.

Check in with employees and co-workers. Ask them about their day and discuss what the business might collectively do better in the coming days. Did they receive any interesting feedback from customers? Did they run across any specific challenges that need to be addressed? How are they doing with their duties, and do they have any suggestions or needs you should be aware of?

Touch base with customers. As time allows, it’s a great idea to touch base with a customer or two to ask if there is anything they need or any feedback they would like to share. This makes them feel special and provides great input that can help the business thrive.

End on a Positive Note. It’s always helpful to have a pre-determined end time for your business day. That helps you plan and go about the day on a schedule that works for you. At the end of the day, take a few minutes to practice gratitude. Thank yourself and others for a job well done. Focus on the positive so you can return home in a good mood without negative thoughts infringing on your personal time.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you’re ending your business day on the right note and setting yourself up for success. So don’t wait – start implementing these changes today!
